چکیده

The desert locust remains a major threat to global food security. Control operations are crucial tool manage crisis; this research investigated the nature of control conducted between 2019–2021. Historical data on and were obtained from survey reports at FAO Locust Hub analysed with respect reports, land cover types, cropland/rangeland extent crop productivity data. We found that 16.1% grid cells presence 14.9% had proportion rangeland higher than 0.75; while 13.3% 13.2% croplands 0.75, highlighting reported in both cropland. continue be used reduce overall numbers protect crops. Furthermore, through identifying which crops most risk, our analyses indicate wheat production was under highest strain during periods increased infestations.

Assaying Visual Memory in the Desert Locust

The involvement of associative learning cues has been demonstrated in several stages of feeding and food selection. Short neuropeptide F (sNPF), an insect neuropeptide whose effects on feeding behavior have previously been well established, may be one of the factors bridging feeding and learning behavior. Recently, it was shown in Drosophila melanogaster that the targeted reduction of Drome-sNP...

Control of tumbling during the locust jump.

Locust can jump precisely to a target, yet they can also tumble during the trajectory. We propose two mechanisms that would allow the locust to control tumbling during the jump. The first is that prior to the jump, locusts adjust the pitch of their body to move the center of mass closer to the intended thrust vector. The second is that contraction of the dorsolongitudinal muscles during the jum...

Corpus allatum activity in vitro during ovarian maturation in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria.

1. Radiochemical in vitro assays show that there are large and rapid changes in the spontaneous rate of juvenile hormone synthesis and release during the course of sexual maturation in the locust. 2. Parallel observations on glands incubated with farnesenic acid show that the rate-limiting step is always prior to the stage of esterification of farnesenic acid to the final intermediate, methyl f...

Preventing desert locust plagues: optimizing management interventions

Solitarious desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), inhabit the central, arid, and semi-arid parts of the species’ invasion area in Africa, the Middle East, and South-West Asia. Their annual migration circuit takes them downwind to breed sequentially where winter, spring, and summer rains fall. In many years, sparse and erratic seasonal rains support phase chang...

Dynamic flight stability in the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria.

Here we provide the first formal quantitative analysis of dynamic stability in a flying animal. By measuring the longitudinal static stability derivatives and mass distribution of desert locusts Schistocerca gregaria, we find that their static stability and static control responses are insufficient to provide asymptotic longitudinal dynamic stability unless they are sensitive to pitch attitude ...
